After a heavy storm, water flows across a low spot in the road ahead. It looks only a few inches deep, and a pickup truck just drove through it. What should you do?
Blue A approaches storm water flowing across the road that looks shallow; silver pickup B just drove through and is already on the far side.
Correct answer: Turn around and find another route, because the depth and road damage are not known.
Why
Six to twelve inches of water can make you lose control, and about two feet of moving water carries most cars downstream. More people die in floods than in any other storm hazard, and many of them are in vehicles. If your car stalls in water, leave it at once and go to higher ground.
