You drive on a four-lane road that has no median and no center turn lane. A school bus on the other side of the road, going the opposite way, stops and shows alternating flashing red lights. What must you do?
A approaches a westbound school bus from the opposite direction on a four-lane road with a double yellow center line, no median and no center turn lane. The bus's stop arm is extended and the card states its red warning lamps flash.
Correct answer: Stop before you reach the bus and stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing
Why
Utah law lets opposite-direction traffic continue past a school bus with flashing red lights only on a divided highway, on a highway with five or more lanes (a center turn lane counts as a lane), or where a traffic signal or a peace officer controls the place where the bus stops. A four-lane road without a median is not one of these cases. Children can cross in front of or behind the bus without looking, so watch for them before you continue.
