You drive a loaded pickup down a long mountain grade. Your brakes feel hot but still work well, and you want to stop to let them cool. A runaway vehicle ramp is just ahead. What should you do?
Loaded blue pickup A travels downhill toward an empty gravel runaway vehicle ramp on the right. A remains in the main lane before the ramp entrance, and the card states that the brakes still work.
Correct answer: Drive on to a safe pullout or turnout and keep the ramp clear
Why
Utah law lets you use a runaway vehicle ramp only in an emergency that requires the ramp to stop your vehicle, such as a brake failure on a downgrade. You may not stop, stand or park on the ramp or in its path, because another vehicle may need it with no warning. If your brakes get hot but still work, slow down and use a turnout, a pullout or a rest area to let them cool.
