Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You enter a freeway where traffic moves at about 65 mph. You reach the start of the acceleration lane at 40 mph. What should you do?
Blue car A is at the start of an acceleration lane. Silver cars B and C travel in the nearest freeway lane, with open space between them. The card gives freeway traffic at 65 mph and A at 40 mph.
Correct answer: Speed up in the acceleration lane, signal, and merge into a safe gap
Why
An acceleration lane gives you room to match the speed of freeway traffic before you merge. Look for a gap, signal for at least two seconds, and move over only when it is safe, because drivers already on the freeway have the right-of-way. A merge far below traffic speed, or a stop at the end of the ramp, makes a crash more likely. After you merge, turn off your signal.
