Passing target: 80% (40/50)
On a highway with two lanes in your direction, you drive in the left lane at the speed limit. A faster car comes up close behind you, and the right lane has space. What should you do?
Blue car A and silver car B travel in the left of two same-direction lanes. B follows closely behind A, and the right lane is empty. The card states that A is at the speed limit.
Correct answer: Signal and move safely to the right lane so that the car can pass
Why
Utah law says that a driver in the left lane of a highway with more than one lane in the same direction must move safely to a lane on the right when another vehicle overtakes from behind. This applies even at the speed limit, because the left lane is for passing. A vehicle less than two seconds behind you while the right lane has space is evidence that you block traffic, and you can get a citation. The rule does not apply while you pass, prepare for a left exit or turn, or follow lane signs.
