On an icy road, the back of your car starts to slide to the left. You want to keep going straight in your lane. What should you do?
A is on a straight icy road. A rear-motion arrow points to the driver’s left as stated in the stem; no front-wheel detail or steering instruction appears.
Correct answer: Stay off the brake, steer where you want to go, and turn back as the car straightens.
Why
In a skid, the tires lose grip, and the car turns away from the direction that you want to go. Small, smooth steering toward your path brings the front of the car back in line. If you do not turn the wheel back in time, the car can spin the other way. On icy roads, slow down and avoid rapid braking and sharp turns, so that a skid does not start.
