Georgia DDS Road Test: Virtual or In-Person, What to Bring, Scoring
How do you take the Georgia road test, and what score do you need?
Submit the Online License/ID/Permit Form, then book the road test in the Georgia DDS online appointment system. Walk-ins and same-day appointments are not available. Bring a licensed driver aged 21 or older and a car with its registration and insurance card. The car must pass a DDS safety inspection. The test is virtual or in person, and you need a minimum score of 75% to pass.
Where the Georgia road test facts come from
The booking steps and the car and passenger rules come from the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) Road Test page. The test types, the skills list, the retest waits and the test languages come from the DDS Test and Exams Information page. The rental car rules, the driver assistance rule and the size of the parking space come from the DDS Drivers Manual. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (dds.georgia.gov) before you drive.

Virtual Road Test or Traditional Road Test
| Type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Virtual Road Test (VRT) | An examiner gives the test remotely through a dual-facing camera and a hands-free device. A licensed adult aged 21 or older rides as the passenger. |
| Traditional Road Test | An examiner gives the test in person, from the passenger seat. |
Who can ride in the car during the road test?
Only you and one licensed driver aged 21 or older may be in the car. On the teen test (under 18), no other minors, children or pets may ride. On the test for drivers 18 and over, no children or pets may ride. On a Virtual Road Test, this adult is the passenger.
What the car needs for the Georgia road test
- A paper copy of the vehicle registration and a current valid insurance card. The car must have liability insurance. Try our free question on which document shows coverage for a road test car.
- A license plate that is not expired. If the car has temporary tags or you bought it in the last 30 days, bring the bill of sale.
- A pass on the DDS safety inspection before the test.
- A four-wheel vehicle. You must provide the car.
- For a rental car: your name must be on the rental agreement. The FAQ below has the other rental rules.
Can you take the road test in a car with driver assistance or a stick shift?
Yes. You may use a car with advanced driver assistance technology, but you must show that you can drive the car without it. If the car has a manual transmission, you must shift smoothly and correctly. If the car has no turn signals, you must know the hand signals and use them on the test.
Skills the Georgia road test checks
| Skill | What the examiner looks for |
|---|---|
| Parallel parking | Park midway between two standards, less than 18 inches from the curb. The space is 22 feet long and 10 feet deep. |
| Straight-line backing | Back about 50 feet, slowly (not more than 10 mph), as straight and smoothly as you can. Turn your head and look back the whole time. |
| Stops at signs and signals | Give the hand or brake signal, approach in the proper lane, stop before the crosswalk and stay stopped until pedestrians clear it. |
| Turnabout | Turn the car in a narrow space with a two-, three- or five-point turn. |
| Corners and turns | Be in the proper lane, look both ways at corners, and signal an adequate distance before the turn. |
| Right of way | Yield to pedestrians, motor vehicles, bicyclists and anyone else who moves into the intersection before you. |
| Passing | Check ahead of and behind your car so that you can pass without interfering with other traffic. |
| Following distance | When the car ahead passes a fixed point, such as a telephone pole, count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two." If you reach the point before you finish, you are too close. |
What score do you need to pass the Georgia road test?
You need a minimum score of 75% to pass. Keep both hands on the steering wheel and do not rest your elbow on the window. Do not try to talk with the examiner, who is busy giving instructions and recording your score. At the end, the examiner reviews the score sheet with you and discusses the results. Is the Georgia road test only in English?
Yes. The Road Skills Test is given only in English. This rule is for the road test only: the Road Rules and Road Signs sections of the knowledge exam are available in 26 languages. Our free practice test is in English only.
What if you fail the Georgia road test?
What teens need for the road test
A teen applicant (under 18) must meet all Class D license requirements and bring every listed document. These include proof that you completed the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) and an approved driver education course: 30 hours of classroom instruction or an equivalent online course, plus 6 hours with a certified instructor or the DDS Parent Teen Driving Guide. You also need at least 40 hours of other driving, including 6 hours at night, and you sign a DDS affidavit for these hours at the road test. The Class D license rules list the rest.
What drivers 18 and over need for the road test
If you are 18 or older, the DDS road test page says that you must hold a valid Georgia non-commercial learner's permit, pass the Driver's License knowledge exam, and sign an affidavit for 40 hours of supervised road driving, including 6 hours at night. DDS pages differ on the permit: the DDS Drivers Manual lets a first-time applicant age 18 or older apply for a Class C right away. The safer plan is to get a Class CP permit before you book the road test. If you plan to skip the permit, ask your DDS Customer Service Center first. If your license is suspended, you cannot test. The guide to a Georgia license over 18 covers the rest of the steps.

Georgia road test: common questions
Can I use a rental car for the Georgia road test?
Yes, if the rental terms allow it. Many rental agreements do not allow a car to be used for driver training or testing. You must be listed as a driver on the rental contract, bring a copy of the contract and show proof of valid insurance. DDS reviews the contract and decides if testing is allowed.
Can my mom or dad be the adult in the car for the virtual road test?
Yes, if your parent is 21 or older and has a valid driver's license. A parent, guardian or other responsible adult who meets these rules rides as the passenger. The examiner gives the test remotely through a dual-facing camera and a hands-free device.
What happens if the weather is bad on my road test day?
If the weather or any other condition is unsafe for you or the examiner, DDS does not give the test. Testing can also stop because of equipment failure or other events that nobody can control. In these cases, DDS tries to reschedule you as soon as possible.
Can I change or cancel my Georgia road test appointment?
Yes. Use the DDS Schedule or Modify Appointments tool with your appointment number and your email address. The Customer Service Center can also reschedule your test if you do not meet the requirements or if it finds a duplicate appointment, so check the car and passenger rules before test day.
