How Much Does a Driver's License Cost in Oklahoma? Permit and Fail Fees

informational·how to guide·

Where the Oklahoma fee facts come from

The fees come from the Service Oklahoma learner permit page, the Drive Test Center page and the Service Oklahoma REAL ID page. The fee table in the Oklahoma Driver Manual (effective June 1, 2025), the Service Oklahoma written test, intermediate, unrestricted and 18+ license pages, and Oklahoma law (47 O.S. 6-101 and 6-110) agree with them. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.

What is in the $42.50 for a permit or first license?

Oklahoma law sets a $4 application fee and a $38.50 license fee for a new Class D license, so the total is $42.50. For the 8-year option, the license fee is $77, so a new 8-year license costs $81. REAL ID and non-REAL ID licenses have the same fees.
A teen pays $42.50 for the Learner Permit. An adult pays $42.50 for a Learner Permit, or for a first license when the adult tests without a permit.

What a teen pays from Learner Permit to Unrestricted License

  1. 1

    Learner Permit: $42.50

Pay $42.50 when you pass the written and vision tests, plus $4 for each failed written test.

  2. 2

    Intermediate License: $25

Pay $25 when you pass the drive test, plus $4 for each failed drive test. Teens under 18 also need the Work Zone Safe Course, which is free. Check the time and hours you need first with our free question on the permit period and practice hours.

  3. 3

    Unrestricted License: $25

Pay the $25 replacement fee when you move up from the Intermediate License. With no failed tests, the three steps cost $42.50 + $25 + $25 = $92.50.

How much does a failed test cost in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma law sets the fee for each failed examination at $4, for every license class. Service Oklahoma adds the $4 to your issuance fee, and you pay it when the permit or license is issued.
Examples: a teen who fails the written test two times pays $42.50 + $8 = $50.50 for the permit. If that teen then fails one drive test, the intermediate license costs $25 + $4 = $29. An adult with no permit who fails one drive test pays $42.50 + $4 = $46.50. Our free question on what the Class D written test covers helps you study before you test.

When can you retake the Oklahoma drive test?

You fail the drive test the first or second time
Take it again at least 1 day later, or when the examiner says. You get up to 3 tries in this way, and each fail adds $4.
You fail the third drive test and you hold a Learner Permit
Wait 30 days before the fourth test. After that, take the test no more than one time every 30 days.
You fail the third drive test and you have no permit
Get a Learner Permit ($42.50) and hold it for 30 days before you test again.

Is the Oklahoma drive test free?

With a valid Learner Permit, you can take the drive test with Service Oklahoma at no charge. You can also choose a designated examiner. A certified driver education instructor can apply to be one. Oklahoma law lets a designated examiner charge a fee for each Class D drive test, pass or fail, so ask for the price before you book. For the test steps and what to bring, see our guide to the Oklahoma drive test.

Does the written test cost extra?

The online written test has no extra fee. You can take it online two times. After two online fails, you take it in person, as many times as you need. A written test at a Career Tech Testing Center costs $25, and you still go to a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office for the vision test and the permit. See how the online option works in our guide to the Oklahoma online written test.

Oklahoma driver's license cost: common questions

How much does it cost to renew an Oklahoma driver's license?

A Class D renewal costs $38.50 for 4 years or $77 for 8 years. You do not pay the $4 application fee again, because that fee is only for a new license. If you are 65 or older at any time in the calendar year of the renewal, you pay no fee.

How much is a replacement Oklahoma driver's license?

Replacing a Class D license that is still valid costs $25, for the 4-year or the 8-year option. If your license has expired or will expire soon, you renew it instead, for $38.50 or $77. The Oklahoma Driver Manual fee table shows no replacement fee for drivers 65 and older.

Does a REAL ID cost more in Oklahoma?

No. Oklahoma law sets the same fees for a REAL ID compliant Class D license and a noncompliant one. When you pass the drive test, your new license keeps the REAL ID status of your permit or old license. To go from a noncompliant permit to a REAL ID license at the Drive Test Center, complete the Service Oklahoma REAL ID checklist first.

Is an Oklahoma driver's license free at 65?

Yes. If you are 65 or older at any time in the calendar year of issuance or renewal, you pay no fee for a Class D license or a motorcycle endorsement. This applies to new licenses and renewals. The Oklahoma ID card is also free at 65 and older. The free license does not apply to a commercial driver license (CDL).

Do adults pay twice if they get a learner permit first?

Yes, but at the Drive Test Center the second fee is lower. An adult pays $42.50 for the Learner Permit and must hold it for 30 days before the license. At the Drive Test Center, a permit holder who passes pays the $25 replacement fee plus $4 for each earlier fail. With no fails at the Drive Test Center, the permit route costs $67.50, which is $25 more than a first license without a permit.
