informational·how to guide·

Where the Oklahoma written test facts come from

The question count, pass mark, online rules, retest rules and fees come from the Service Oklahoma written test page. The permit ages, the waiver rules and the Career Tech fee come from the Service Oklahoma learner permit page. The test topics, the oral test and the one-day wait come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. The $4 fee and the proctor rules come from Title 47 of the Oklahoma Statutes (sections 6-101 and 6-110). Other facts come from the Service Oklahoma Driver Study Hub, out-of-state transfer and New Driver License 18+ pages. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.

What is on the Oklahoma written test?

The test checks what you know about Oklahoma traffic laws, road rules, road signs and safe driving. The Oklahoma Driver Manual adds drug and alcohol laws and their effects. All questions for the Class D test come from that manual. You should also know the local traffic laws of your city or town.
Our free question on what the written test covers lets you check that your study plan matches these topics.

Where can you take the Oklahoma written test?

You take it online at home
Use a desktop or laptop with a front-facing camera, a working microphone and a quiet room. Phones and touchscreens do not work. You have 60 minutes. Under 18, an adult must be there for the identity check. For the full steps, read our guide to the Oklahoma online written test.
You take it in person
Register at a Service Oklahoma location or a nearby Licensed Operator. Bring your birth certificate or Oklahoma ID. You also take a vision test during the visit.
You prefer a Career Tech Testing Center
The center charges $25 for the test. You still go to a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office for the vision test and the permit.
You want your driver education instructor to give the test
A law change that starts November 1, 2026 lets a certified driver education instructor or designated examiner proctor the written test. Ask your driver education school if it will offer this.

What happens if you fail the Oklahoma written test?

By law, you must wait at least one day before you take the written test again. You can take it as many times as you need, but only two times online. After two online fails, you must test in person.
State law sets the fee for each failed test at $4. Service Oklahoma adds this fee to your account, and you pay it when the permit is issued, together with the $42.50 permit fee.

How to get your learner permit after you pass

  1. 1
    Pass the written test

Answer at least 15 of the 20 questions correctly. You get your result right after the test.

  2. 2
Go to a Service Oklahoma location or a Licensed Operator

Bring your primary ID and your Social Security number. Under 18, bring a parent or legal guardian. You take a vision test, meet with an examiner, and pay the permit fee and any failed-test fees.

  3. 3
    Get your temporary paper permit

If you pass the written and vision tests, you get a temporary paper permit. The permit card comes by mail.

  4. 4
    Drive with a licensed adult

The permit lets you drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a licensed driver who is at least 21. Our free question on permit hours and practice hours checks what you need before the next license.

Can you skip the Oklahoma written test?

Yes, in some cases. A driver education completion certificate can waive the written test when you give it to Service Oklahoma. A Parent-Taught Driver Education course does not waive it.
If you move to Oklahoma with a valid license from another state and you do not change vehicle type, you can transfer it without a written or drive test when your driving record meets Service Oklahoma's standards. A license that expired not more than 6 months ago also qualifies.
